Cartography in Vosca[]

Techniques[]

Cartography (the practice of making maps) has been practiced for millennia. The Orredin were the first to create maps for the purpose of coordinating their empire, but their techniques involved levitation using magic, and otherwise very simple surveying techniques. The Ruvians and the Burdinadin have done most of the legwork since then, the Burdinadin providing advanced and accurate methods and formats for maps, and the Ruvians providing the legwork and the diligence to actually get the job done. Maps are not strictly common in Vosca, but they are available, and there are are at least three "standard" maps that are produced by printers in Dace, Illegon and the Kaselreich. All are right to a degree, but none are totally accurate.

Famous Cartographers[]

Probably the best known cartographer in Vosca was Darius Volkanius of Helion, an Orredin who made it his mission to accurately chart the entire coastline and all of the islands of the Broken Sea. His findings were so accurate, so excruciatingly, damningly precise, that it is traditional in all mapmaking traditions in Vosca to center the map around his map. The result is that the Broken Sea section of most maps are shockingly accurate and precise, but grow more imprecise and vague as they move outwards from the center. Lord Volkanius was killed in an unfortunate moth accident before he could continue his cartographic efforts outside of the Broken Sea, but his legacy lives on in the hearts of all brave men who seek to chart the world.
